SINKEH is a renovated 19th century Chinese house in the heart of George Town. The traditional open plan of the house which we have retained, allows for easy social interaction and ensures ample ventilation. The 8 modern bedrooms on the other hand, provide sufficient privacy and creature comforts. Even though we are contemporary, the past is never far away. The walls, timber beams, building layout, views of the city and even our name, link us to history and heritage.
Our name SINKEH, means “new arrival” in Hokkien - a commonly used Chinese dialect in Penang. The sinkeh were Chinese immigrants who came to Penang in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Comprising traders, craftsmen and coolies, they formed part of the vibrant mix of migrant communities that made up the population of this colonial trading post.
We love the arts at SINKEH. Performances, rehearsals, lectures and discussions are regular occurrences in the studio. Should you see and hear things that excite your senses, rest assured they are merely the creative expressions of artists who occasionally pass through.
Conveniently located in George Town’s heritage zone, Sinkeh is within walking distance of the city’s historical centre and its famed street-food stalls.
